The sample download for this chapter contains a VS.NET solution containing two projects: MG.WebParts.TreeView and Setup.MG.WebParts.TreeView. This solution builds the TreeView web part DLL and creates a CAB setup file that SharePoint needs to install the web part. To install the sample, you should extract the two projects to the following locations on your hard drive: C:\development\portal\MG.WebParts.TreeView C:\development\portal\Setup.MG.WebParts.TreeView If you prefer moving either of the projects to another location, that s fine but you need to edit the references in Setup.MG.WebParts.TreeView to point to the actual location for MG.WebParts.TreeView. You also need to extract the following two files: Add.TreeView.webpart.cmd, which is used to add the web part to SharePoint. This file can be extracted anywhere on your hard drive. TreeViewKey.snk, the strong-name key used to build the project. This file should be extracted to C:\ unless you change the reference in the AssemblyInfo.vb file in the MG.WebParts.TreeView project. Finally, extract the dtree library to the C:\program files\common files\Microsoft shared\web server extensions\60\template\layouts\Jtree folder. To install the web part, go to VS.NET and choose the Build Solution option; then open a command window and run the add.TreeView.webpart.cmd file. You should then see the web part in the web part gallery menu in SharePoint, as shown in Figure 5-5.

Blog architecture that uses the existing database In the blog architecture shown in Figure 4-5, two Web applications run concurrently, and they access, process, and manipulate the same data. This does not mean that the two applications use the same physical database. With most modern databases, you have the ability to couple two database processes and synchronize the two physical databases. This has the advantage that data consistency is managed by the database. If you plan on writing synchronization software, ask yourself if you think you could do a better job than a database when it comes to managing consistency. Letting the database manage consistency is patently a good idea, so let s update the architecture to use two separate databases (see Figure 4-6). The modified architecture has two database processes, and the two processes are connected using the synchronization mechanism of the database. From the perspective of the user, developer, and administrator, each application uses its own database. The two database processes manage the exact same tables, views, and stored procedures. It is assumed that this new architecture will use the same tables, views, and stored procedures, but in reality this is not always the case because a new application typically involves the addition of tables, columns, and data. The solution to this issue is to use database encapsulation, which is possible with views and stored procedures. The blog architecture therefore requires further changes, which are implemented as shown in Figure 4-7.

Only one application can occupy a certain port at any given time. When developing production-quality applications, you should always allow the user or system administrator to configure the port numbers in a configuration file, via the registry or using a GUI.

I ll discuss the task of building the TreeView web part in three stages: 1. How to iterate through the object library collection classes that represent doclibs, folders, and files 2. How to format the output that will produce the TreeView 3. How to create the web part properties that will be visible via the Modify Shared Web Part option

The updated architecture accesses the existing data using the entries table. The entries table is a view that joins the wp_authors and wp_users tables. The old application can continue executing, and the new application can use its own tables, views, and stored procedures. So are you in the clear yet Not quite there is a problem in that if you make extensive use of views, it is often not possible to update a view. The solution to this is to use stored procedures that will update the appropriate tables (see Figure 4-8).
